A little warmth....

Most people who know me well would probably tell you that I like to work on projects around the house.  It is my "therapy".  I have yard therapy and home improvement therapy.  Today I pretty much completed some home improvement therapy.  It was six years in the making.   I bought my house in 2005 and saw the house was mostly updated.....except the downstairs bathroom.  The bathroom had great bones with a jetted tub.   The problem was that it was a dark 80's tomb with an octagon sink to thrown in for good measure.

So I slowly began to update it.  Today, I got it 99.5% done.  I am proud to say that at no time did I need to hire a professional to help out.   Granted there were no plumbing or electrical moves but there was plenty of risky things that must be done right because we are dealing with a basement and water.  Between Jo and I, we did all the work ourselves.  I enjoyed every moment of it.....well except the plumbing.   I learned that when you rip out the old connections, just go buy new stuff.  It is a lot less of a headache.

The aim was to make the bathroom feel warmer and welcoming.  No more bare cold linoleum and pink tile.  I recycled and reused the vanity base, toilet and wall cabinet.   I spent about $700.00 on the whole project.

  • Laminate flooring
  • Vanity Top
  • Faucet
  • New trim
  • Hardware and supplies

Here are some before, during and after photos.  I think it is a much better space.

Pink tile...yes...pink tile.
It was a big mess.

Cement board is a pain but I did

This is how it looked in March 2012
Like the Octagon sink?

The base was in good shape.  Just needed new life.

Linoleum did not go all the way to the wall.

Dry fit of the laminate.  The key is to leave gaps.
Some tricky cuts for the toilet,

The finished product....floor is much warmer.
Quite a difference

New globes, vanity top and mahogany stain.

Not bad for a girl.....

Home ownership is so fun sometimes.   In the continuing effort to make my home more appealing for future buyers, we took on the task of changing out a boring old vanity with a sea shell shaped top for a new moder one that fits the decor in the laundry space.   The project total cost was about $175.00 and lost of swearing because pluming was involved) and some sore back muscles from squeezing into tight spaces.  Not bad work for a girl.

Out with the old......

The new......

The next project will be updating the vanity and flooring in the downstairs bathroom.

So what should I do.....  Bamboo or vinyl?
